Netscape email is set up from the Edit-Preferences menu. This will
launch a new window. The left side of this window contains a list labelled
Categories. Email is set up in the Mail and Newsgroups category.
Under Mail and Newsgroups there are sub-categories. If the
sub-categories are not shown, click on the triangle to the left of
Mail and Newsgroups to expand the sub-categories.
First click on the Identity sub-category. The right hand side of the
window will then show the Identity screen. Here you should fill in at least
the Email address field. If your NetPERLs user name is foo, fill in
foo@netperls.com here. Be sure to use all lower case letters, because
the NetPERLs server cares about upper and lower case.
If your real name is Calvin Klein but your user name is
foo, it is usually nice to fill that out in the Your name field. This
way people who get mail from you will know it is from Calvin Klein, rather
than just foo@netperls.com whom they have never hear of.
Next Click on the Mail Servers sub-category. Click on the Add
button on the right of the Incoming Mail Servers box. This launches
another screen. Enter mail.netperls.com in the Server Name
field. Click on the button next to Server Type and select POP.
Finally, enter your user name in the User Name field. If your user
name is foo, enter just foo. Do NOT enter foo@netperls.com. We recommend
that you also check the Remember password and Automatically
download any new messages buttons. The Check for mail every 10
minutes is also a good setting. When done, click the OK button.
Next set up your outgoing mail server. Since NetPERLs does not provide
dialup service, this setting will be strange. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP)
server field, put the mail server of your dialup service provider.
If you dial in to zippy.net and they tell you that their mail server is
mail.zippy.net, enter mail.zippy.net here. Enter your user name for your
dailup serves in the Outgoing mail server user name field.
Do NOT enter mail.netperls.com in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server
field. If you do this, you will get an error message when trying to send
mail.
Through the wonders of internet mail, mail that you send out will be
relayed by mail.zippy.net to wherever you want it to go. The Identity
screen you filled in above will cause your NetPERLs address to be filled in
the From: and Reply-To: fields, so returning mail will come to your
NetPERLs email.
When done, click the OK button. You are now ready to send and receive mail.
